News... You Can Use

=> Camera Power
digital camera zoom power The number of megapixels is the specification that defines the power of a digital camera. However, digital cameras often offer power enhancers in both an optical and a digital zoom. This may confuse a buyer.

An optical zoom increases the image magnification within a scene. It changes the relationship of the elements on the lens and it uses all of the pixel resolution that is available when it is doing this. With an optical feature, you can zoom in or out while the camera is still maintaining a sharp, high-quality image. Essentially, optical zoom means that the camera is using the full pixel resolution for every shot.

Digital zoom works on a different principle. Digital zoom enlarges an image by cropping. As you use digital zoom on a scene, the camera crops the pixels in the image sensor and discards information outside the zoom frame. Only the pixels inside the frame are recorded. The camera's full resolution isn't being used. The more you zoom in, the fewer pixels you'll have in your image frame. You are discarding image quality whenever you use the digital zoom feature.

child posesBuying a digital camera, the digital zoom rating should not play into a your buying decision. However, the megapixel resolution and optical zoom are important factors. Essentially, the higher megapixel rating and higher optical zoom rating are indicating the quality of the lens that you are buying.

You can ignore a digital zoom rating, and in fact experts will recommend that you can disable the digital zoom. Use photo-editing software to edit and to crop pictures rather than waste resolution using the camera to crop an image using digital zoom.

Still, a 6-megapixel or higher means there are some pixels to spare. You can digitally zoom the 6-megapixel images and still get a sharp shot. A camera that offers 3-megapixels is offering enough pixels for a "good" image. However, when you are working with 3-megapixels, if you use a digital zoom your images are not as sharp as when you do not use the digital zoom. There will be a visible difference.

When buying, first look at the megapixels, then at optical zoom. Essentially, you can ignore digital zoom.

=> TV Power

Another baffling consumer category is televisions. Competing technologies, as well as the transition from analog to digital programming, along with falling prices on thin sets with huge screens are making things difficult to make decisions on TV buying.

Televisons galoreKeep this in mind... old-style televisions with cathode ray tubes still offer better picture quality and significantly lower prices. Rear-projection televisions and enhanced-definition (ED) plasma televisions are the more popular types of sets since these offer larger screen viewing areas in nicer looking packaging.

Also keep in mind that HD is the way of the future. Enhanced-definition sets offer better resolution than old-style standard-definition sets, but ED's are not high definition. They do not support new full-resolution HD programming.

=> Web Power

Teens Use the Web More than Watch TV July 24, 2003 — America's teenagers have a new favorite pastime--using the Internet. Studies say that teenagers now spend more time each week online than they do watching television.

Web teensInternet use tops more than 16 hours a week -- and that doesn't include time spent reading e-mail. Teens report watching TV about 13 hours per week. The study was commissioned by the Internet company "Yahoo".

So what do the teens say they do online? The number one activity is using a search engine to find information. That's followed by e-mail, instant messaging, playing games and simply browsing.

Hardware... tips

=> Trouble-Free Computing

A colleague of mine buys and repairs slow computers for next to nothing. Later, he sells them for several hundred dollars profit.

How he works is simple. He purchases computers online at E-Bay. They are advertised with a key descriptor like SLOW, for instance. He chooses systems that are otherwise running.

When his purchases arrive, he checks them out. Sometimes he removes software or hardware.

Generally, he spends a few minutes on basic repairs; like adding memory, replacing a modem, or installing a larger hard disk. Always, he spends a few minutes removing Web software. Finally, he uses a can of compressed air to clean out the dust bunnies. Later in the day, he posts the cleaned up system on E-Bay again for double or for triple what he paid.

Virtually every PC-Repair colleague says that most slow PC's that they work on are loaded with Internet spyware and adware. Beyond that, most computing problems will arise from lack of RAM (memory), lack of disk space, problem hardware, problem software, and from lack of attention to the basics of disk management.

Here are a few tips for avoiding major problems.

  1. Avoid Browsing the Internet (at large) until… you have antivirus and firewall software. Keep this software up to date.
  2. Also, make sure that Windows is kept up to date.
  3. Make sure that your firewall is blocking known hacker system vulnerabilities.
  4. Learn how to use the browser to fine tune temporary storage of Internet files.
  5. Cleanup your hard disk. Learn how to scan your computer for problems and to repair the basic problems.
  6. When you do use the Internet, avoid scams and high-risk Web pages.
  7. Stick to the mainstream until you are comfortable with your system and its capabilities.

------------------------------

=> Disk Drive Maintenance
Be aware that Windows starts to slow way down if you have less than 100 megabytes (MB) free on your hard drive. Actually, if you want smooth operation, a minimum of about 15 percent free space on your hard disk is needed for your system.

Empty the Trash
Periodically, empty the Recycle Bin.

Temporary Files
When programs run on your computer, they often create temporary "placeholder" files on your hard drive. Most temp files are deleted when application programs close. However, application program hangs and computer crashes will leave temporary files un-deleted.

These files are small and harmless, but after a time they start to add up to lot of space. Collectively, the files are called temp files. You will find them in two folders.

C:/TEMP
C:/WINDOWS/TEMP

If your computer is sluggish, deleting the accumulated temp files may help to speed it up. Some shutdown problems may also be cured by deletion of temp files.

Do not delete the folders. Its the files that you want to delete. You can do it manually or use a disk drive task--a system tool. If you see any files that end in .tmp, you can safely delete them. You will not be able to delete a temp file that is currently in use.

Two important disk drive tasks (tools) that need to be run regularly are disk cleanup and disk defragmentation
------------------------------

=> Disk Cleanup
Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP use a Disk Cleanup Wizard. The wizard streamlines the process of clearing out unwanted temp files.

Disk cleanup rids your computer of the accumulation of temporary files of all sorts and of old setup files. Most users should run a disk cleanup every week.
First close all running programs. Look in the System Tools folder (Start menu / Accessories) to locate the program for running disk cleanup or...

1. Click Run from the Start Menu
2. In the Open box, type cleanmgr
3. Select the drive you want to clean up
4. Click OK

Do not use your computer for anything else while the utility is running.

When the Cleanup calculation is done, you can choose what files to delete or to keep. Disk Cleanup opens with a list of the possible files to be deleted. Select a file type to display a description. Check the boxes for the files you want removed, and click OK.

You can schedule Disk Cleanup to run when you want it to.

1. Open Control Panel (Start Menu)
2. Click System and Maintenance, and choose Scheduled Tasks
3. Choose Add Scheduled Task to start the Scheduled Task Wizard

In the list of applications you want Windows to run, click Disk Cleanup, and then click Next. Select a frequency for the task--weekly--and click Next. Select a day of the week, and select a time for the task to run.

If you use a password for Windows, supply one for Windows to run this task.
------------------------------

=> Disk Defragmentation
Disk defragmentation eliminates unused drive space and it organizes your programs and data too. Most users should run disk fragmentation quarterly. I have nearly a million files, and I run it monthly.

You can look in the System Tools folder to locate the program for running the disk defragmenter or...

1. Click Run from the Start Menu
2. In the Open box, type dfrg

If you have more than one drive, select the drive that you want to defragment. Run the analysis first. Your system will report how much fragmentation is on your disk along with a recommendation to continue with defragmentation only if the drive needs this procedure. If your system is not fragmented enough to cause delays in processing, you can wait until next month.

Do not use your computer for anything else while the utility is running.
